If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, you may be surprised to learn that sleep troubles, including sleep apnea and snoring, may be to blame. Due to recent studies, it seems that individuals who have sleep difficulties may actually exhibit symptoms of ADHD, including an inability to concentrate, restless behavior, anxiety and more.

Sleep Apnea and ADHD

In a recent issue of the medical journal “Pediatrics”, a study was published which suggested that those who experienced breathing problems during sleep and other sleep disturbances were between 40% and 100% more likely to develop symptoms of ADHD. The study followed 11,000 children from the time they were six months old until they were six years old, and the sleeping habits of these children were monitored on a routine basis. In the end, researchers discovered that children who had the poorest sleeping habits, including snoring and apnea, were all more likely to develop ADHD later in life.

What this means for ADHD-diagnosed individuals and those who have not been diagnosed with ADHD is that getting a good night’s sleep is more important than ever. In some cases, researchers believe that getting quality sleep may reverse the negative effects of ADHD in diagnosed patients, and it may even prevent the disorder from forming in others, including children and adults. In other cases, quality sleep may help to at least diminish the effects of ADHD to a level that is manageable without medication.

If you’re concerned about the correlation between sleep and ADHD, it’s important to see your doctor to discuss your options. In some situations, medical professionals prescribe sleep aids to patients who are having trouble sleeping, while in more severe cases, medical devices are prescribed to combat problems such as sleep apnea.

If you’re prescribed sleeping aids, it’s important to remember that some of these drugs may be very powerful. In addition, some people form addictions to sleep aids, and these addictions can lead to sleeplessness, internal damage and more. The cost of prescription sleep aids can also be quite high, especially if they are used every night.

Another alternative is to turn to natural sleep and snoring aids. These products are designed to help give a better night’s sleep, but without the risk of habituation or addiction. In most cases, natural sleep aids are also more cost effective when compared to prescription sleep aids or snoring products.
